Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Neuron Software Inc. (“Neuron,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, shares, stores, and protects personal information when you visit neuron.ink, sign up for product updates, or use the Neuron mobile application (collectively, the “Service”).

Neuron Software Inc. is an Ontario corporation based in Canada. Depending on where you live, Canadian privacy law and other privacy laws, including the EU or UK GDPR and applicable U.S. state privacy laws, may give you additional rights.

1. The short version

Neuron is a private journaling and reflection product. To provide the Service, we store the thoughts and other content you choose to enter.

When you use AI features, Neuron may send your content and related context to third-party AI services, including Google and OpenAI, so they can generate reflections, summaries, prompts, embeddings, and other features. We also use LangSmith to monitor and debug our AI systems. LangSmith traces may contain prompts, model responses, journal text, identifiers, and other metadata associated with an AI request.

We use PostHog for product analytics. PostHog receives usage events and may receive information such as your Neuron account identifier, email address, display name, device information, and IP-derived approximate location. PostHog does not receive your journal entries or other content you write in Neuron.

We use Sentry for crash and error monitoring. Sentry receives technical information associated with crashes and errors, such as device information, app version, user or account identifiers, routes, stack traces, and error information.

Our iOS app includes Meta’s SDK so we can measure installs from our ads. It does not receive your journal entries or account details.

We do not sell your personal information or journal entries. We do not share your journal entries or account information with advertisers. We do not use your journal entries to train Neuron’s own AI models.

Deleting your Neuron account removes your account and journal content from Neuron’s primary active application systems, subject to backups and legal requirements. Some information held in analytics, diagnostics, AI traces, billing systems, or third-party systems is subject to separate retention periods and may not be automatically deleted at the same time as your Neuron account.

2. Information we collect

Information you provide on our website

If you sign up for product updates, we collect your email address and any name or other information you choose to provide.

If you contact us, we collect the contents of your message and the contact information you use.

Information you provide in the Neuron app

We collect account information needed to create and operate your account. Depending on the sign-in methods available to you, this may include your email address, an authentication identifier provided by Apple or Google, and an optional display name.

We collect the thoughts, journal entries, answers, reflections, values, goals, prompts, and other text you choose to enter into Neuron. We also store information generated from or associated with that content, such as timestamps, relationships between entries, generated insights, summaries, embeddings, tags, and other product data needed to provide Neuron’s features.

Because journal content is free-form, it may include sensitive or highly personal information if you choose to write about those subjects. Please only provide information you are comfortable processing through the Service.

Voice dictation

If you choose to use voice dictation, Neuron requests access to your microphone.

On iOS, voice dictation uses Apple’s speech-recognition technologies to convert speech into text. Depending on your device, operating-system configuration, and Apple’s implementation, speech recognition may occur on the device or involve Apple’s services.

Neuron does not intentionally store your raw microphone recording as a journal audio recording. Once speech has been converted to text, the transcript is treated like other journal content and is subject to the processing described in this Privacy Policy.

Information collected automatically

Neuron collects technical and usage information needed to operate, secure, diagnose, and improve the Service.

This may include app version, operating-system version, device type, screen dimensions, locale, routes or screens viewed, timestamps, network and request information, crash data, stack traces, error messages, feature usage, and similar technical information.

PostHog provides product analytics. We may send PostHog usage events such as app launches, onboarding progress, feature usage, entry creation, and similar product interactions. These events may be linked to your Neuron account identifier, email address, display name, device information, and an approximate city, region, or country inferred from your IP address. These events do not include the text of your journal entries or other content you write in Neuron.

Sentry provides crash and error monitoring and may receive user or account identifiers, device and operating-system information, app release and environment information, routes, stack traces, errors, request metadata, and related diagnostic information.

The Meta SDK collects app events and device information for advertising measurement; see section 6.

Website analytics

The neuron.ink website uses Vercel Analytics for website traffic measurement. We use it to understand aggregate website activity and performance.

Subscription and payment information

Subscriptions purchased in the iOS app are processed by Apple through the App Store.

We use RevenueCat to determine whether your subscription or promotional entitlement is active and to make subscription functionality available in the app.

Neuron does not receive or store your full payment-card number or bank-account information.

Information received through Apple and RevenueCat may include an app user identifier, product or subscription identifier, purchase status, transaction information, renewal and expiration information, promotional entitlement information, and country or storefront information.

3. How we use information

We use personal information to:

• create and authenticate accounts;
• store and retrieve your journal content;
• provide journaling, reflection, memory, search, and AI functionality;
• generate AI responses and insights;
• maintain relationships between thoughts and insights;
• process and verify subscriptions;
• provide voice dictation;
• maintain security and prevent abuse;
• diagnose crashes, errors, and performance problems;
• analyze how features and onboarding are used;
• measure the performance of our own advertising;
• communicate important service information;
• provide support;
• send marketing communications when you have agreed to receive them;
• improve the Service; and
• comply with legal obligations.

We do not use your journal entries to train Neuron’s own general-purpose AI models.

4. AI processing

Neuron uses third-party artificial-intelligence services to provide parts of the Service.

When an AI feature is invoked, Neuron may send the text you have written, relevant prior content, instructions generated by Neuron, and related metadata to one or more AI providers.

At present, these providers include Google and OpenAI.

We use paid or business API services rather than consumer chatbot accounts. OpenAI states that API inputs and outputs are not used to train its models by default. Google states that prompts and responses sent through its paid Gemini API services are not used to improve Google’s models by default.

Those providers may nevertheless retain API data for limited periods for security, abuse prevention, service operation, logging, or other purposes permitted by their terms and our configuration. For example, some Google Gemini API logging and interaction features currently provide configurable retention windows of up to 55 days.

Neuron also uses LangSmith, provided by LangChain, Inc., to trace, monitor, test, and debug AI operations. A LangSmith trace may contain AI inputs and outputs, including Neuron prompts, journal content supplied as AI context, model responses, identifiers, timing information, and other operational metadata.

LangChain’s current terms state that customer data is not used to train, develop, or improve its products.

5. Marketing communications

If you choose to receive product updates or marketing communications, we use your email address and any name you provided to send those communications through Resend.

You can unsubscribe through the link included in a marketing email or by contacting hello@neuron.ink.

Unsubscribing from marketing does not prevent us from sending messages necessary to operate your account or provide the Service, such as security notices, billing-related information, or material updates to our legal terms.

6. Service providers

We use third parties to operate Neuron. These providers receive only the information reasonably necessary for the functions they perform, subject to their agreements with us and applicable law.

We require service providers that process personal information on our behalf to provide appropriate protection for that information consistent with our agreements, applicable law, and the protections described in this Privacy Policy.

We may update our providers as the Service changes. Material changes to how journal content or other sensitive information is processed will be reflected in this policy.

Advertising measurement

To measure how our ads on Facebook and Instagram perform, the Neuron iOS app includes Meta’s SDK. It sends Meta app events (such as installs, app opens, and in-app purchases), device information, your IP address, and an identifier the SDK generates. It does not receive your journal entries, your account identifier, email address, or name, or your device’s advertising identifier. Meta processes this information under its own terms; see Meta’s Privacy Policy.

7. What we do not do

• We do not sell your personal information.
• We do not sell your journal entries.
• We do not share your journal entries, account identifier, email address, or name with advertisers or advertising platforms.
• We do not access your device’s advertising identifier (IDFA) or ask for permission to track you across other companies’ apps and websites.
• We do not use journal entries to train Neuron’s own general-purpose AI models.
• We do not receive your complete payment-card or bank-account details for App Store subscriptions.
• We do not intentionally retain raw microphone recordings from Neuron’s voice-dictation feature.

8. International processing

Neuron is based in Canada, but several of our service providers operate in the United States or other countries.

As a result, your information may be transferred to, processed in, or stored outside your province or country of residence, including in the United States. Information stored in another jurisdiction may be subject to lawful access by courts, law-enforcement agencies, or governmental authorities in that jurisdiction.

Where applicable law requires particular contractual or transfer safeguards, we use appropriate mechanisms with our service providers.

9. Retention and deletion

Different categories of information have different retention periods because they serve different purposes and are stored in different systems.

Your Neuron account and primary journal data are generally retained for as long as your account remains active.

When you delete an individual journal item, we remove it from the active Neuron product where technically applicable. Residual copies may remain temporarily in backups, generated records, logs, or third-party systems until those copies expire or are separately deleted.

When you delete your Neuron account, we delete or de-identify the account and journal information held in Neuron’s primary active application database, except for information that we are required to retain or that remains subject to the separate retention systems described below.

LangSmith traces are not currently deleted automatically when you delete your Neuron account. AI traces associated with previous requests may therefore remain in LangSmith after account deletion until they are separately deleted or expire under the retention settings applicable to our LangSmith account.

PostHog analytics events are not currently deleted automatically when you delete your Neuron account. Historical analytics events may remain in PostHog according to our PostHog retention settings or until separately deleted or de-identified.

Sentry crash and diagnostic data is retained according to the retention period configured for our Sentry account.

Meta retains information it receives through its SDK under its own terms; it is not deleted when you delete your Neuron account.

AI providers may retain request or response information for limited periods under their business/API terms, including for security and abuse-monitoring purposes.

RevenueCat and Apple may retain transaction, purchase, and subscription records independently of your Neuron account where needed to operate subscriptions, maintain financial records, prevent fraud, resolve disputes, or comply with legal requirements.

Our infrastructure providers may temporarily retain backups, security logs, and operational records after active information has been deleted.

We may also retain information where reasonably necessary to comply with law, enforce our agreements, prevent fraud or abuse, resolve disputes, or establish or defend legal claims.

If you would like us to investigate deletion of information associated with you in analytics, observability, or other systems that are not automatically cleared through in-app account deletion, contact hello@neuron.ink. Where we can reasonably identify the information and deletion is required or appropriate, we will delete or de-identify it subject to legal, security, and technical limitations.

10. Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

• request access to personal information we hold about you;
• request correction of inaccurate information;
• request deletion;
• obtain a portable copy of certain information;
• withdraw consent where processing is based on consent;
• object to or restrict certain processing; or
• complain to the relevant privacy regulator.

You can delete your Neuron account using the controls provided in the app.

You can also make a privacy request by emailing hello@neuron.ink from the email address associated with your account.

We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling a request.

Where applicable, we will respond within the period required by law.

Canada

Canadian users may have rights under PIPEDA and applicable provincial privacy laws. Our privacy contact can be reached at hello@neuron.ink.

If we cannot resolve a privacy concern, you may have the right to contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or the applicable provincial privacy authority.

European Economic Area and United Kingdom

Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, our processing may rely on performance of a contract, legitimate interests, consent, or compliance with legal obligations, depending on the activity.

You may also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority.

California and other U.S. states

If applicable state privacy law applies to Neuron’s processing of your information, you may have additional rights to access, correct, delete, or obtain a copy of personal information.

Neuron does not sell personal information.

11. Children’s privacy

Neuron is intended for people who are at least 16 years old.

We do not knowingly permit children under 16 to create Neuron accounts. If you believe a child under 16 has provided personal information to us, contact hello@neuron.ink.

12. Security

We use technical and organizational safeguards intended to protect personal information, including encrypted network connections, encryption provided by our infrastructure providers for stored data, authentication and access controls, and security and diagnostic monitoring.

No online service can guarantee absolute security.

If we become aware of a security incident for which notification is required by applicable law, we will provide the required notification.

13. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as Neuron changes.

If a change materially affects how we collect, use, or share personal information, we will provide notice where required, such as through the Service, by email, or before the change becomes effective.

The date at the top identifies the most recent update.
